Special precautions

Indicated for children from 6 weeks of age. Intramuscular injection in the anterolateral thigh.

Contraindications and deferrals

  • Contraindication Grade III or higher anaphylaxis after a previous dose · Component: Any component of the vaccine
    Absolute contraindication to further doses containing the same components.
  • Contraindication Encephalopathy of unknown cause within 7 days after a pertussis-containing vaccine · Component: Pertussis component
    Switch to DT vaccine (diphtheria and tetanus only, without the pertussis component).
  • Defer High fever ≥ 38.0°C or acute illness
    Postpone vaccination until the child has been fever-free for at least 3 days and is well.

Reactions after vaccination and what to do

Mild fever below 38.5°C, mild pain and swelling at the injection site Common

Onset: Within 24–48 hours after vaccination · Lasts: 1–2 days

Home care: Give the child plenty of fluids or breastfeed more often, and dress the child in light clothing. If the fever is ≥ 38.5°C, give paracetamol 10–15 mg/kg body weight every 4–6 hours. Do not put anything on the injection site.

Go to a health facility immediately if: High fever above 39°C that does not come down, seizures, noisy or wheezy breathing, blue lips or fingertips, or continuous high-pitched crying for more than 3 hours.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

For children under 24 months
