Invasive Hib disease
A leading bacterial cause of purulent meningitis and pneumonia in young children.
Transmission
Through the respiratory tract by droplets from the nose and throat of sick people or healthy carriers without symptoms.
Symptoms
Purulent meningitis: sudden high fever, severe headache, projectile vomiting, stiff neck, seizures, bulging fontanelle in babies. Severe acute pneumonia.
Complications
Sepsis, brain swelling, empyema, permanent neurological damage: deafness, epilepsy, cerebral palsy, intellectual disability.
People at high risk
Children aged 6 months to 2 years without immunity.
