Polio
Vietnam eliminated polio in 2000 and keeps this achievement with oral bOPV and injected IPV.
Transmission
Through the digestive tract (faecal–oral route): drinking water, food or dirty hands contaminated with the virus.
Symptoms
Fever, headache, nausea, muscle pain, followed by acute asymmetric flaccid paralysis of the arms or legs and loss of tendon reflexes.
Complications
Permanent spinal paralysis causing lifelong disability; bulbar paralysis causing respiratory failure, breathing arrest and death.
People at high risk
Children who have not had all doses of bOPV/IPV.
