Pneumococcal disease (IPD)
Pneumococcal vaccine is being added to the Expanded Programme on Immunization under Resolution 104; there are several types: PCV10, PCV13, PCV15, PCV20, PPSV23.
Transmission
Spread by respiratory droplets when coughing or sneezing, and by direct contact.
Symptoms
Depends on the site: pneumonia (high fever, productive cough, difficulty breathing), middle ear infection (ear pain, discharge), meningitis (stiff neck, seizures, drowsiness).
Complications
Invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD), sepsis, death from septic shock, deafness after meningitis.
People at high risk
Children under 2 years, older adults ≥ 60 years, people with COPD, asthma, heart disease, diabetes, or without a spleen.

- Pneumovax 23 (PPSV23) – Multivalent pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine
