Special precautions
Indicated from as early as 2 months of age up to adults aged 50.
Reactions after vaccination and what to do
Fever after Bexsero (common when given with other vaccines) Common
Onset: Within 6–24 hours after vaccination · Lasts: 24–48 hours
Home care: Paracetamol does not need to be given before vaccination. If the child has a fever ≥ 38.5°C, give paracetamol 10–15 mg/kg, apply warm compresses to the forehead, armpits and groin, and breastfeed often.
Go to a health facility immediately if: High fever with seizures, a continuous fever above 39°C that does not come down with medicine, or drowsiness and difficulty waking.
Risk of transient apnoea in extremely preterm infants (≤ 28 weeks of gestation) Severe
Onset: Within 48–72 hours after primary doses · Lasts: Transient
Home care: Extremely preterm infants or infants with immature lungs need close monitoring of breathing at a health facility for the first 48–72 hours. Do not stop or delay vaccination: the risk of meningococcal disease in this group is 25 times higher.
Go to a health facility immediately if: Pauses in breathing, blue lips or fingertips, irregular breathing.
Giving with other vaccines
- Menactra (MenACYW-DT): can be given on the same day. Bexsero and Menactra can be given at the same visit at two different anatomical sites without affecting safety or immunogenicity.
- VA-MENGOC-BC: can be given on the same day. Because their main components differ (OMV PorA vs 4 recombinant proteins) and both are inactivated vaccines, people who have had VA-Mengoc-BC can receive Bexsero at any time to broaden coverage of serogroup B strains (>80%), with no waiting interval.
