Transmission

Through the respiratory tract by saliva, droplets when coughing, and sharing bowls and chopsticks.

Symptoms

Fever, headache, tiredness, painful swelling of the parotid salivary glands on one or both sides that changes the shape of the face, pain on swallowing.

Complications

Orchitis in males (which can cause testicular atrophy and infertility), oophoritis, aseptic meningitis, deafness.

People at high risk

School-age children, adolescent boys.
