Special precautions

Give as soon as possible after birth (within 30 days). A characteristic shallow scar forms 2–5 months after vaccination.

Reactions after vaccination and what to do

Red papule and small ulcer that heals by itself, leaving a shallow scar Common

Onset: From 2 weeks after vaccination · Lasts: 2–5 months

Home care: This is the normal reaction through which BCG builds immunity. Keep the site clean and dry, do not squeeze out pus and do not apply any medicine. The BCG scar is a sign that immunity has developed.

Go to a health facility immediately if: A swollen armpit lymph node larger than 1.5 cm with pus that bursts and keeps draining, or a deep, spreading ulcer that does not heal.
