Meningococcal vaccines available in Vietnam and schedules by age
Bexsero, VA-Mengoc-BC, Menactra, MenQuadfi and Nimenrix: which serogroups each one covers, from what age it is given, and how many doses.

There are two groups of meningococcal vaccines in Vietnam. One protects against serogroup B (Bexsero; VA-Mengoc-BC also covers serogroup C). The other protects against the four serogroups A, C, W and Y (Menactra, MenQuadfi, Nimenrix). To be protected against all 5 serogroups A, B, C, W and Y, both types are needed. The schedules below come from the book Recommended vaccination schedules for all ages in Vietnam (Vietnam Association of Preventive Medicine, 3rd edition, 2026) (vaccines licensed up to 31/12/2025) and the book Prevention of meningococcal disease in Vietnam (Vietnam Association of Preventive Medicine).
Vaccines against serogroup B
Bexsero (4CMenB, GSK), intramuscular, from 2 months of age:
- Starting at 2–5 months, 3+1 schedule: 3 doses 1 month apart, plus 1 booster in the second year of life, at least 6 months after dose 3.
- Starting at 2–5 months, 2+1 schedule: 2 doses 2 months apart, plus 1 booster in the second year, at least 6 months after dose 2.
- Starting at 6–11 months: 2 doses at least 2 months apart, plus 1 booster in the second year, at least 2 months after dose 2.
- Starting at 12–23 months: 2 doses at least 2 months apart, plus 1 booster 12 to 23 months after dose 2.
- From 2 years (up to 50 years): 2 doses at least 1 month apart. A booster is recommended for people who remain at risk.
The 2+1 and 3+1 schedules for infants aged 2–5 months produce similar immune responses. The Vietnam Association of Preventive Medicine therefore considers that the 2+1 schedule can be used; the 3+1 schedule can be considered during outbreaks. The full course should be completed with the same group B vaccine.
VA-Mengoc-BC (Cuba, serogroups B and C), intramuscular: people aged 6 months to 45 years receive 2 doses 6–8 weeks apart. People who have had VA-Mengoc-BC can also receive Bexsero to strengthen protection against serogroup B.

Vaccines against serogroups A, C, W, Y
Menactra (MenACWY-D, Sanofi), from 9 months to 55 years:
- 9–23 months: 2 doses at least 3 months apart.
- 2–55 years: 1 dose.
- People aged 15–55 who remain at risk: 1 booster can be given at least 4 years after the previous dose.
MenQuadfi (MenACYW-TT, Sanofi), from 6 weeks of age:
- Infants aged 6 weeks to 6 months: 3 doses at least 2 months apart, plus 1 booster in the second year, at least 2 months after the last dose.
- From 6 months and adults: 1 dose.
- A booster can be given to people over 12 months of age who have had a vaccine against the same serogroups.
Nimenrix (MenACWY-TT, Pfizer), from 6 weeks of age:
- Infants aged 6 weeks to 6 months: 2 doses 2 months apart, plus 1 booster at 12 months.
- From 6 months: 1 dose.
- From 12 months, 1 booster can be given if a meningococcal vaccine was given before.
Children who started with an ACWY-TT vaccine should continue with that course and do not need to switch to Menactra. Older adults should use a vaccine approved for their age group, such as MenACWY-TT.

Can they be given at the same time?
According to the meningococcal book:
- Menactra and VA-Mengoc-BC can be given without any interval between them.
- Bexsero can be given at the same time as diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, Hib, inactivated polio, hepatitis B, pneumococcal, measles, mumps, rubella and chickenpox vaccines, and meningococcal A, C, W, Y vaccines.
- There is no need to give paracetamol before Bexsero; only use it if the temperature is 38.5°C or higher.

Suggested plan by age
- Children from 2 months: start the group B vaccine. MenQuadfi or Nimenrix can be started if early protection against A, C, W and Y is wanted.
- Children from 9 months: Menactra becomes another option.
- Adolescents (from 11–12 years) and people at risk: vaccinate or give a booster, following the principle of broad protection against A, B, C, W and Y.
The YHDP vaccination schedule calculator shows the schedules above by date of birth. The specific choice of vaccine is made with a doctor after a pre-vaccination screening.
