Typhoid fever
There is an injectable vaccine (Typhim Vi) and an oral vaccine (Vivotif).
Transmission
Through the digestive tract: food and drinks contaminated by the waste of sick people or healthy carriers.
Symptoms
Prolonged high fever rising in steps, bloated abdominal pain, loose "pea soup" stools, a pulse slow for the fever (pulse–temperature dissociation), rose spots on the abdomen and chest, drowsiness or delirium.
Complications
Gastrointestinal bleeding from ulcerated Peyer's patches in the intestine, perforation of the small intestine with acute peritonitis and death.
People at high risk
People living in areas with poor sanitation, travellers to endemic areas.
